Milan keep goals flowing to follow in footsteps of 1964 team

Milan reached a landmark last achieved by the club over 50 years ago with their 3-1 Europa League win at Celtic on Thursday.

Stefano Pioli’s Milan, who are unbeaten in 21 games – their best streak since 1996 – have now scored two or more goals in 10 consecutive games.

Opta revealed the last Milan team to do the same accomplished the feat in December 1964.

The current team’s run began with a 4-1 victory at Sampdoria on July 29 and continued three days later with a 3-0 home win against Cagliari in their final match of the 2019-20 Serie A season.

Milan began the new campaign by seeing off Shamrock Rovers 2-0 in Europa League qualifying, and by beating Bodo/Glimt 3-2 and Rio Ave 9-8 on penalties after a 2-2 draw they reached the group stage, where Celtic were their first opponents.

Milan sit top of Serie A after four wins from four, beating Bologna and Crotone 2-0 before seeing off Spezia 3-0 and Inter 2-1 in Saturday’s derby.

They will be hoping history does not repeat itself this season, however, having also been Serie A leaders when they were amid the 1964 goal glut, only to allow neighbours Inter to pass them in the closing weeks of the season, on their way to a Serie A and European Cup double.
